# Omni Desktop

> Omni Desktop is the xpander chat as an app on your computer, plus what the web cannot do: agents can work in the folders you choose, browse and use your apps on your Mac, while you watch.

Omni Desktop, by xpander.ai, is the xpander chat you already use on the web, as an app on your computer. Your agents, conversations and history are the same ones; nothing is copied into the app. What the app adds is your computer: in a conversation you start from the app, an agent can open the folders you trust, read and write files there, run commands in them, browse the web in its own browser and, on a Mac, use your apps, each as far as your organization and you allow.

## What you can do with it

* **Work on local files.** Trust a folder once, read only or read and write, and agents in your conversations can use it. An agent that needs a folder you have not trusted asks, and says why. See [Trusted folders and access](https://docs.xpander.ai/desktop/folders.md).
* **Run commands on your Mac, safely.** Agents can run commands in your trusted folders, after you allow it in the chat. Every command runs in a sandbox that reaches only those folders. See [The shell and what it can reach](https://docs.xpander.ai/desktop/shell.md).
* **Let an agent browse for you.** Agents can open sites, read them and fill forms in the Omni browser, a separate browser with its own sign-ins, never your own. See [Browser control](https://docs.xpander.ai/desktop/browser.md).
* **Let an agent use your apps.** On a Mac, an agent can see your screen and use the mouse and keyboard, after you allow it in the chat, with a bar on screen and Stop always in reach. See [Computer control](https://docs.xpander.ai/desktop/computer-control.md).
* **Run scheduled tasks on your Mac.** Link a scheduled task to your Mac and each run works with your folders, browser and apps while the app is open. See [Scheduled tasks on your Mac](https://docs.xpander.ai/desktop/scheduled-tasks.md).
* **Hand work to the cloud and take it back.** Move a conversation to the cloud and the agent keeps working on a copy of its folders after you close the lid. Move it back and you choose, file by file, what lands on your Mac. See [Move to the cloud and back](https://docs.xpander.ai/desktop/move-to-cloud.md).
* **Stay in the loop.** Native notifications tell you when a task finishes, an approval waits or an agent has a question, and you can approve, deny or answer right on the notification. See [Notifications](https://docs.xpander.ai/desktop/notifications.md).
* **Switch between the app and the browser.** Open any conversation from the web in the app, or from the app in the browser. See [The window](https://docs.xpander.ai/desktop/window.md).

## Who controls what

Your organization's Desktop policy decides what is allowed at all: whether Omni Desktop is on, files, the shell and its network, browser control, computer control, keeping screenshots, which folders may be trusted, moving work to the cloud and back, and what a task does while your computer is offline. A new organization starts with everything on. An admin sets the policy per organization and per group, and can see and revoke every signed-in computer. See [Devices and Desktop policy](https://docs.xpander.ai/desktop/admin.md).

Inside that, you decide: which folders agents may use and how, which of the allowed abilities stay on for your computer, whether agents work on your computer or in the cloud first, and, in each conversation, whether an agent may run commands, write files, use the browser or control your Mac. See [Your settings and the policy](https://docs.xpander.ai/desktop/your-controls.md).
