# Move to the cloud and back

> Move a laptop conversation to the cloud so the agent keeps working after you close the lid, then bring the work back and decide, file by file, what lands on your Mac.

A conversation that runs on your Mac stops when your Mac sleeps. Move it to the cloud and the agent keeps working on a copy of its folders; move it back when you want the results on your Mac. Your organization's [Desktop policy](https://docs.xpander.ai/desktop/admin.md#desktop-policy) decides whether you can, with one switch for each direction, and you can turn either off for your Mac in [Settings](https://docs.xpander.ai/desktop/your-controls.md).

## Move a conversation to the cloud

1. In the conversation, choose **Move to cloud** in the laptop strip under the composer.
2. Pick the folders the agent needs. The app uploads a copy of each.
3. Choose **Move to cloud**. You can take up to five folders in one move, each up to 2 GB.

The copy leaves out folders that are rebuilt anyway (`node_modules`, `.venv`, `__pycache__`) and anything private, such as keys and credentials, which never leave your Mac.

The next messages in the conversation run in the cloud, on the copies. The folders on your Mac are not changed.

## Bring it back

1. In the conversation, choose **Bring back** in the laptop strip under the composer.
2. The app downloads the cloud copy and compares it with what it uploaded, and lists every change:
   * **Apply**: the file changed only in the cloud. It is updated on your Mac.
   * **New**: the file was created in the cloud.
   * **Conflict**: the file changed both in the cloud and on your Mac. Choose **Keep mine**, **Take the cloud version** or **Keep both** (the cloud version is saved next to yours, for example `README.cloud.md`).
   * **Deleted in the cloud**: listed only. Nothing on your Mac is deleted.
3. Open any file to see what changed, then choose **Apply changes**.

![4 changes from the cloud dialog: two files to apply, one conflict with Keep mine, Take the cloud version and Keep both, one new file, and two files deleted in the cloud listed only](https://mintcdn.com/xpanderai-099931d1/5kO48nCPjVxjKi_K/images/desktop/move-back.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=5kO48nCPjVxjKi_K\&q=85\&s=a4e7f66f6e68aa9d608859cbd1e0daef)

Changes from the cloud, with a conflict to settle. Shown with sample data.

After you apply, the conversation runs on your Mac again.

## What is never lost

Nothing is deleted on either side. The cloud copy stays with the conversation after you bring it back, and a file deleted in the cloud stays on your Mac.
