# The window, sidebar and composer

> The Omni Desktop window is the xpander chat with your computer added: the laptop status in the sidebar, the laptop strip under the composer, the menu bar, the quick prompt, and links between the app and the browser.

The window is the chat you know from the web: agents and conversations in the sidebar, the conversation in the middle, the composer at the bottom. Everything described in [Xpander Chat](https://docs.xpander.ai/use/app.md) works the same way. This page covers what the app adds. On Windows the app lives in the notification area instead of the menu bar, and says PC where a Mac says Mac.

## The laptop status

The sidebar shows whether this Mac is connected to your xpander, with the Mac's name:

| Status | Meaning |
| - | - |
| **Mac connected** | Agents can reach this Mac in conversations you start from the app. |
| **Connecting Mac** | The app is connecting, at launch, after sleep or after a network change. |
| **Mac offline** | No connection right now. The app retries on its own. |
| **Mac turned off** | Your organization turned Omni Desktop off for you. |
| **Mac removed** | This Mac was revoked by an admin or forgotten in Settings. Sign in again to use it. |

## The laptop strip

Under the composer, a strip shows what the next message can use on this computer:

* **On this Mac**: the conversation runs on this computer, so agents can use your trusted folders. When the computer is offline the strip shows that instead, and agents work in the cloud only.
* **Folders**: the trusted folder, or how many are trusted (**Trust a folder** while none is). Click it to see them, switch each between **Read** and **Read & write**, choose the [folder for new files](https://docs.xpander.ai/desktop/folders.md#the-folder-for-new-files), stop trusting one or add another.
* **Shell on**: agents can run commands on this computer. **Shell unavailable** means commands cannot run here, for example on Windows today.
* **Move to cloud** and **Bring back**: hand the conversation to the cloud and take the work back. See [Move to the cloud and back](https://docs.xpander.ai/desktop/move-to-cloud.md).

When an agent drives the [Omni browser](https://docs.xpander.ai/desktop/browser.md), a strip under the title bar says so, with **Take over** and **Stop**. While a macOS permission that [computer control](https://docs.xpander.ai/desktop/computer-control.md) needs is off, the sidebar shows how many Mac permissions are off.

Only conversations you start or continue from the app reach this Mac. A message you send to the same conversation from the web runs in the cloud, and the agent is told the laptop is not available for it.

## Menu bar and quick prompt

The app keeps an icon in the menu bar. Click it to see your account and the connection, what waits for you, your trusted folders, **New chat**, **Settings**, **Open at login**, **Sign out** and **Quit**. While an agent drives the Omni browser, the menu also has **Stop browser control**. The icon carries a dot while something waits for you, such as an approval or a question.

Press **Cmd+Shift+Space** anywhere on your Mac to open the quick prompt. Type a message and press Return: it opens in the main window as a new conversation. Change the shortcut, or turn it off, in [Settings](https://docs.xpander.ai/desktop/settings.md).

## Open in Desktop and Open in browser

* **From the web to the app.** In a conversation's or an agent's menu on the web, choose **Open in Desktop**. The same page opens in the app. If the app is not installed, the web offers **Get Omni Desktop**.
* **From the app to the web.** In the window's title bar, choose **Open in browser** to open the page you are on in your browser.

Pages that belong to the web only, such as the Platform, billing and organization settings, open in your browser when you choose them in the app.

## Source filter

Conversations started from the app carry the **This Mac** source. Filter the conversation list or the Task manager by source to find them.
