Skills - xpander.ai

A skill is something an agent can do in an outside system, or a job it knows how to do. An admin decides which skills exist for the organization; a person adds them to an agent with Add skill, and every call a skill makes passes through xpander: validated, credentialed at the moment of use, recorded under the person who asked, and held for approval where the organization says so.

Four kinds of skill

Kind	What it is	How xpander runs it	How to add one
API connector	An HTTP API described by an OpenAPI spec, one action per operation	xpander holds the credential (organization-wide or per person), validates each call against the operation schema, injects the credential at call time and records it. MCP connector	A server that speaks the Model Context Protocol. Remote: HTTP or SSE, authenticated with None, an API key, OAuth2 or custom headers. Local: a stdio command with its environment	Remote servers are registered once for the organization in Settings > MCP registry (health check, dynamic client registration badge, per-user OAuth where the server supports it). Local servers run inside the agent’s own workspace and are tested when saved	MCP Connector under Custom skill in Add skill (the dialog is titled Connect an MCP server), or register it for the organization in Settings > MCP registry. xpander ships no catalog of MCP servers: the registry holds only the servers your organization added
Markdown skill	A `SKILL.md` alone, or a zip bundle with `SKILL.md` plus scripts and files, telling the agent when and how to do one job	Loaded fully into the agent at run time from the skills registry; versioned (edits bump the patch version); access is Private, Group or Org-wide	Skill under Custom skill in Add skill (offered as Create a skill when the Skills view is empty), Import file or zip, From URL, or publish from a repository with `xpander.yaml`
Code	A Python function (a custom action)	Stored with `POST /v1/custom_functions`, generated from a description or a curl call with `/generate`, run with `/execute` inside the platform; listed as Code under Custom skill in Add skill, opening straight into the agent’s workspace. For an agent loop you run yourself, `@register_tool` in the SDK	The Custom Functions API, the SDK, or from inside a skill through the workspace `skill_utils` endpoints

The steps for each kind are on Add a skill. In the Add skill panel, the Connectors filter selects both API and MCP connectors. The Skills filter holds Markdown skills together with the actions xpander ships with the runtime, such as web search and send email. Those built-ins carry a Powered by Xpander badge.

Every installation has its own set

The catalog below is the built-in set of API connectors that ships with every installation, cloud or self-hosted. It is a starting point, not the list your organization sees. User-group switches under Settings > User groups decide who may add API connectors, MCP connectors and custom actions, or generate skills. Everything created inside an installation exists only there: an API connector from your own OpenAPI spec, an MCP connector, a skill bundle, a custom action. Two installations rarely hold the same list, and a private skill never appears in another organization’s catalog.
